Lisbeth: individually

Write down some initial ideas for a short story based on the real life account you have just been working with.
-          Who could be the main character?
An obvious main character would be Scott, because the whole story/diary is written from he´s point of view and we know some of he’s feelings.

-          What kind of narrator would you choose?
If Scott is the main character it would be natural to make him the narrator, as an first person narrator.
But another possibility is to write a story from all (or some) of the men from the expedition’s point of view. In this case I can make the persons and the story as I want.
In contrast to these two options a third person narrator, who knows everything could also be a good narrator.

-          What about the composition?
I think I will write in past tense. Like looking back at the expedition.

-          What do you need to remember for the plot, the atmosphere, the language?
The language must be easy written, the atmosphere must be gloomy because of the saturation and the plot must be simple but with a lot of details.

Linhs ideas for the short story

Individually:
Write down some initial ideas for a short story based on the real life account you have just been working with.
-              Who could be the main character?
o   You could be the main character, so you are “going through” the pain and the bad weather. It could be interesting to read, how you would feel, when you are imaging yourself in a situation like this.
-              What kind of narrator would you choose?
o   I would choose a 1. Person narrator. As I have written above, it could be exciting to write about it, so you can think on other ways.
-              What about the composition?
o   I would write it as an experience I look back on. So I would write it in the past tense.
-              What do you need to remember for the plot, the atmosphere, and the language?
o   That it has to be inspired by the to texts we have read by Scott. It has to be possible to read, where you have got your ideas.
o   The plot could be as the texts we have read about; the men die one by one.
o   The weather and surroundings should be bad, but they has to keep the hope up high.

Individually

Individually:
Write down some initial ideas for a short story based on the real life account you have just been working with.
-          Who could be the main character?
      - A person with a very big and kind of crazy idea.
      - A person who wants to explore something new or try something nobody has done before.
      - One of the persons in the texts view, instead of Scotts.
-          What kind of narrator would you choose?
      - The main character or a person (not in the story) who knows everything.
-          What do you need to remember for the plot, the atmosphere, the language?
      - It have to be an expiring atmosphere, exciting and new. This also has to be seen in the language.

Individually:
-          Take into consideration what you have been talking about concerning the Message to the Public and, based on that, write a new entry in the blog in which you modify (or add to) your initial ideas for a short story. You can also get inspiration from what the others have written about their ideas.
      - A team on an expedition. Wanting to explore something new! Maybe they die, maybe not. Maybe somebody else get first, maybe not.
      - Change the story about Scott and the other dying guys.

What does the text tell us about the moral ideas of explorers - of Scott’s and his men’s attitude to death, fame, honour, their country?

They believe that this expedition serves for the greater good of Britain.
The Brits did not make it to the North Pole as the first country, so they sought honour and fame for being the first people ever to reach the South Pole.

Scott's main concern

What is Scott’s main concern at the very end?
His main concern might be that he hopes that they doesn’t die in a painfull way, and althrough he wants to struggle to the end, he has to realize that they are very near the end.

At stræbe, at søge, at finde, men ikke at give op. ! Et citat fra et digt ”Ulysses” fra 1842 skrevet af Lord Alfred Tennyson.

What is Scott’s main concern at the very end?

Scott’s main concern might include that no one would find them and the letter never would get published.

What does Scott say about the English character?

What does Scott say about the English character?

The Englishmen can just as easily as any other people endure hardships, help eachother out, and meet death with great fortitude.
They can take risks, even though the world is against them.
They are willing to give their lives to the enterprise, for honour to their country.
He is saying that the Englishmen are quite superior.

How does he account for the failure of the expedition?

How does he account for the failure of the expedition?

The cause of the failed expedition, was not lack of skill, but an extremely unfortunate chain of events that led to disaster. A combination of choosing the wrong tools for the party and the bad weather they encountered during the expedition, even though they had started off in the “warm” season.
The force and chill of the gale winds forced them to stay in one location using up their vital resources.
First the ponies failed, and later they had problems with fuel for their experimental motor sledges.

Why does Scott address it “to the public”? Try to define who he means by “the public”.

Why does Scott address it “to the public”? Try to define who he means by “the public”.

He hopes that someone will find them and then see the letter which is adressed to the public, they can publish. Then people can read about how they struggled and kept hoping to the end.
It is to the people at home, in England, so they knew what Scott and his team had to go through. It is so the public can read about their story, so they can understand why Scott and his team didn’t went to England again.

Compare the style of the diary to the style of the letter to the public. In what ways to they differ?

Compare the style of the diary to the style of the letter to the public. In what ways to they differ?

The diary is written like a diary, it is written from Scott to him selves / to the people  who once will find the book and will be interest in the expedition. In the diary we got a lot of personal feelings from Scott and also many facts about e.g. the weather the food-situation, the men's health situation and so on.
The text “to the public” is written by Scott too but this is not written for him selves but for the public at home in Britain. The text is not written like a diary, it is more like a summary of the expedition written for the public.

Describe the men’s situation in terms of

Describe the men’s situation in terms of

a.       their physical surroundings
They are at the South Pole, so it is very cold and of course the men are hurt of the unbearable temperature, once had a frostbite in his food and another walking away from the camp and they never see him again.

b.      the state of their provisions
They run out of fuel a couple of days before they got to the depot, also the food ration     is getting smaller and they are a long wa form the depot.

c.      their mental condition
They only thought about beeing the first men at the south pole but then they saw Norwegian's flag and the knew they were not the first at the South Pole.
Also the weather and the cold temperatures is hard for the men's mental condition but they still hope and wish for the best, they keep fighting against the bad conditions.

Describe Oates’ death on March 16.-17.

What were his last thoughts?
How did he announce what he intended to do?
Why did the others not stop him or go after him?

Who is he writing for? Analyse the text according to the communication model (sender/text/channel/receiver).

He is the firsthand character, because he is the one who experiences this journey and the one who is writing it down.
The text is written with a very readable language, so everyone can read it.
The receiver is the people, in the future, who could be interest in the expedition.

Make a list of the men who accompany Scott on his expedition and keep track of their fates.

Captain Robert Falcon Scott - Dies in the tent, with the rest of his crew
Titus Oates - hoped to go to sleep and never wake up, but woke up the next morning. He went outside of the tent and into the storm. He never came back.Walked to dead as a brave man and an English gentleman.
Wilson - Wanted to bring Titus Oates' sleepingbags, diaries and geological specimens with him, so it could be found with them or on their sledges. In the end, Wilson is the one with best feet.
Bowers -
Scott - Has problems with the right foot, it is the worst.
Edgar Ewans - Died a naturally dead, ran out of food.

What characterizes Scott’s writing style?

Something that characterizes Scott’s writing style, is that he is writing almost the same every day.
He is far away from the depôt, and they have walked long everyday.
He writes like a daily update..
As an extra detail Titus Oates is near the end. Then the writer makes an extra daily update about how he feels. But all the text is very repeative.
the text is very repeative.

What genre is the text?

The text is written as a diary. It is a journey of exploration.
