The diary is written like a diary, it is written from Scott to him selves / to the people  who once will find the book and will be interest in the expedition. In the diary we got a lot of personal feelings from Scott and also many facts about e.g. the weather the food-situation, the men's health situation and so on.

The text “to the public” is written by Scott too but this is not written for him selves but for the public at home in Britain. The text is not written like a diary, it is more like a summary of the expedition written for the public.
